A Chicago couple crashed their SUV late Thursday after an attempted carjacker shot into the vehicle while trying to steal it on Chicago's West Side.

The 36-year-old driver and a 36-year-old woman were sitting in their parked car at about 10:15 p.m. when they say a man jumped out of a dark-colored vehicle and tried to carjack them.

The driver hit the gas and took off but the carjacker fired shots at them, shattering a window.

Thinking he was hit, the driver tried speeding toward Loretto Hospital but lost control of his SUV and crashed into several cars on the 5400 block of West Harrison.

Four people were taken to an area hospital for injuries. The driver is recovering from cuts and bruises.

Police are continuing to look for the suspect. No one was in custody Friday morning.
