Cops Wound Suspect Who Fatally Shot Man

Police said the suspect fired shots at a man and then at officers

One man was wounded and another killed overnight following a shootout in the Gresham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, police said.

Uniformed officers on patrol said they witnessed a suspect fire shots around 10 p.m. at a man standing across the street in the 7800 block of South Marshfield Avenue, according to Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden. The man then started shooting at the officers, Camden said.

Police said the officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. The suspect was taken to the hospital, and the man he shot at died at the scene.

The suspect's condition is not known. The officers were not injured.

Camden said an investigation remains ongoing.
