Cops: Man Made False Police Report to Get Out of Ticket

A 25-year-old suburban Chicago man is accused of attempted disorderly conduct after he allegedly phoned in a report of an armed robbery hoping an officer that pulled him over would let him out of a traffic stop.

Police said officers from the Glendale Heights responded to a Taco Bell at 145 East North Avenue just before 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 for a report of an armed robbery that had just taken place.

When officers arrived, they learned no robbery had occurred and the report was apparently false.

At the same time, a Carol Stream Police Officer was on a traffic stop on North Avenue near the Taco Bell, where he had stopped 25-year-old Michael Cooper.

Detectives investigating the robbery report later traced the 911 call from the Taco Bell robbery to Cooper, and the Carol Stream officer told investigators Cooper was in fact the driver of a vehicle stopped nearby at the time of the robbery.

Police allege that Cooper made the false report hoping the Carol Stream officer “would have to respond and let him out of the traffic stop,” a release said.

Cooper, 25, was charged with one count of attempted disorderly conduct for making a false police report, a misdemeanor that carries a sentence of up to 1 year in the DuPage County Jail. A warrant was issued for his arrest with a bond set a $3,500.
