An off-duty Cook County correctional officer is in serious condition after being shot during an attempted robbery Wednesday night in front of his Southwest Side home, fire officials said.

Correctional Officer Jacob Cano was leaving his home for work when a man tried to rob him and shot him in the back.

The shooting happened in the 4600 block of W. 82nd Street around 9:15 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva.

The Cano was conscious and talking to first responders at the scene.  He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, Roccasalva said.
