Conservative Blogger Calls for Schock's Resignation

The controversies surrounding misuse of funds by Rep. Aaron Schock have prompted at least one conservative blog to call for the lawmaker’s resignation.

“Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) has proven himself incapable of handling his own money, the money of his donors, and taxpayer money,” Erick Erickson, the editor-in-chief of “Red State” wrote Tuesday on the blog. “He has lived excessively off the backs of taxpayers who must be reimbursed and off of donors to whom he is now a servant.”

"He should resign. Perhaps Downton Abbey needs someone else to fill the role of an American playboy chasing a Crawley," the post read.

The call comes amid reports that Schock spent taxpayer money and campaign funds on flights aboard private planes owned by key donors and on lavish “Downton Abbey”-inspired office décor. An investigation also indicated he failed to report a number of gifts on a financial disclosure form in connection with a 2011 visit to London.

The 33-year-old has since hired top lawyers and public relations experts in the wake of the recent questions surrounding his travel and entertainment expenses.

In an interview with POLITICO Tuesday, Schock was asked whether he thought he had broken any rules or federal laws. The congressman simply said, “I certainly hope not.”
