Chicago received the highest ratings for its restaurants, culture/sites and shopping, but rated fairly low on the friendliness scale.
More than 46,000 readers participated in the survey. Charleston, SC was ranked first and San Francisco took the second slot.
The Gold Coast's Waldorf Astoria, formerly the Elysian Hotel, was the highest-rated hotel in the country, scoring its highest marks for the rooms, design and service.
