Monday morning brought the coldest temperatures of the season for the Chicago area, with bitter temps barely hovering around zero to start the day and whipping wind chills dropping as low as minus 15 in some areas.
Some morning sunshine is expected to help temps slowly rise throughout the day, with highs likely to be reached Monday evening in the low 20s – significantly lower than the average of 31 degrees.
As the afternoon comes, skies become cloudy with light snow expected to develop and continue into the evening.
Due to the frigid temperatures, the National Weather Service warns the snow will likely accumulate on roadways and may create slick and hazardous driving conditions. Drivers are urged to plan for extra travel time as the snowfall becomes steady through the afternoon and evening commute.
Snow totals of around an inch are possible by late afternoon, with an additional 1 to 2 inches accumulating by late evening.
The snowfall will likely taper off to light flurries overnight, with high gusts of wind from the northwest producing areas of drifting snow before the Tuesday morning hours.
