Cold Weather Causes More Metra Delays

Trains on multiple Metra lines are experiencing delays Friday afternoon due to switch and track problems likely caused by the extreme cold.

Trains on the Milwaukee District North and Milwaukee District West lines are experiencing delays averaging 10 to 15 minutes because of switch problems near Milwaukee Avenue, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Riley.

Meanwhile, inbound and outbound BNSF trains are also running 10 to 15 minutes behind schedule due to rail problems near the Highlands station in Hinsdale, Riley said.

Both issues were most likely caused by the extreme cold weather, Riley said.

Crews were at both scenes working to resolve the issues, although it was not immediately clear how long the delays would persist, Riley said.

Metra posted a service alert to its website Thursday morning in anticipation of the freeze, warning riders that the weather could lead to delays and urging them to allow extra travel time.
