Coast Guard Saves Struggling Swimmer in Wilmette

Man said he was overcome while swimming near break wall

A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew rescued a struggling swimmer in Lake Michigan Wednesday evening after Wilmette firefighters couldn’t reach him.

The Coast Guard crew took a response boat out of Station Wilmette Harbor to reach the 18-year-old Chicago man, who was struggling off a break wall at Gillson Park in Wilmette.

Coast Guard officials say the man told crew members he was swimming near the breakwall when large waves began pounding him against the rocks.

He was taken to the Coast Guard station, then transported to an area hospital.
