Cicero Man Charged With Murder in Romeoville Shooting

Charges upgraded after 15-year-old victim died Monday

Charges were upgraded Tuesday for a Cicero man linked to the shooting of a Romeoville woman and her 15-year-old daughter.

Erick M. Maya, 23, of 5600 Park Avenue, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery a day after the teen girl died of wounds she sustained during the shooting, prosecutors said. Maya, initially charged with attempted murder, was ordered held without bond.

Briana Valle was deemed brain dead at 2 p.m. Saturday at Loyola University Medical Center and died at 12:03 a.m. Monday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Valle and her 33-year-old mother were shot Thursday morning in an SUV on the 300 block of Emery Avenue as they were leaving for school.

Police said the girl was shot in the head and her mother was shot in the neck. The girl was initially listed in critical condition and her mother was in good condition.

Police say Maya and Valle, a Romeoville High School student, had dated in the past but were not currently romantically involved.

Maya's next court date was scheduled for March 11.
