With its tall grass and flowing fountains, the pond at Hunter's Glen apartments in west suburban Aurora puts a little nature among the complex's buildings.
But on Tuesday, it claimed the life of 20-month-old Nathaniel Strasser, of the 3700 block of Gabrielle Lane in Aurora. Police called the drowning an accident and do not suspect foul play.
They pulled him out and began CPR until paramedics arrived. The boy died just after 9:30 p.m. at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, police said.
Nathaniel lived at another far east side apartment complex, but police did not say why the boy was at Hunter's Glen or who he was with.
Apartment officials did not have any information on the whether the boy's family had any ties to the complex. His family could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
According to his obituary, Nathaniel loved animals and hearing stories at the library. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team.
He is survived by his mother, Melissa Strasser, and his grandmother, Toni-Lynne Strasser.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Daleiden Mortuary, 220 N. Lake St., Aurora.
