Chicago's Cecily Strong Joins Seth Meyers on SNL's ‘Weekend Update'

Chicago performer Cecily Strong will co-anchor “Weekend Update” with Seth Meyers as "Saturday Night Live" sets to premier its new season this month.

Strong, an Oak Park native, cut her chops performing with The Second City Touring Company since 2011 and at iO Theater and joined SNL as a featured performer last year.

Meyers sent out a tweet Sunday congratulating Strong.

It won’t be Strong’s first appearance on the “Weekend Update” as she has played characters like "the Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With at a Party.”

The move comes ahead of Meyers’ February departure from SNL to take over as the new host of “Late Night” when Jimmy Fallon takes over for Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” in 2014.

Meyers, a Northwestern graduate and former Chicagoan, has been an "SNL" cast member for 12 seasons and has been the sketch comedy's head writer for eight of them. He's manned the Weekend Update desk for seven seasons.
