Chicagoland Picks Its Favorite Doughnut Shop

The controversy goes beyond whether you spell it donut or doughnut. The fact is, many people are passionate about their favorite fried dough confectionery.

In honor of National Donut Day, NBC Chicago asked readers which Chicago shop bakes and sells the best doughnuts and readers answered with more than 1,600 votes.

Coming out on top of the poll, which included 12 options from around the city, was Huck Finn Donuts with 21 percent of the votes.

Dinkel’s Bakery and Krispy Kreme tied for second with 15 percent of the votes and Doughnut Vault came in third with 12 percent.

Last year, the Daily Meal named a glazed doughnut at the Doughnut Vault in River North the top doughnut in the country.

Three other local shops were also featured on this list. The chocolate glazed treat from Do-Rite Donuts & Coffee ranked at No. 13, followed by a plain glazed doughnut from Dat Donut at No. 16 and a chocolate cake doughnut from Dinkel’s Bakery at No. 24.

National Donut Day is a hold-over from the Doughnut Day event created by The Salvation Army in 1938. During World War I, officers from The Salvation Army went to Europe to meet with soldiers and serve them doughnuts.
