3 Killed, At Least 22 Wounded in Chicago Weekend Gun Violence

Three people were killed and at least 22 others, the youngest being a 13-year-old boy, have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday afternoon.

In the most recent fatal shooting, a 17-year-old boy was killed and his mother was critically wounded in about 3:45 p.m. Saturday inside a south suburban Harvey gas station. The teen, identified as 17-year-old Juwan Benson, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The woman, whose exact age was not known, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A 22-year-old West Side man has been charged for fatally gunning down a 25-year-old southwest suburban man around 2 a.m. Saturday during an attempted cell phone robbery in the Lakeview neighborhood on the North Side. Kevin O’Malley of Palos Park was shot twice in the chest in the 900 block of West Oakdale and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

About two hours earlier, 24-year-old Jose Velasquez was shot to death in the Little Village neighborhood. Velasquez was walking with his spouse in the 2100 block of South Fairfield when two or three people walked up to them from a gangway, yelling and opening fire, authorities said. Velasquez, of the 2800 block of West 21st Street, was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:41 a.m., authorities said.

Also, a man was fatally stabbed in the throat in a random attack at a Pilsen neighborhood bar early Saturday, police said.

At least 21 others have been shot across Chicago since 4 p.m. Friday:

• An 18-year old man was shot early Sunday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. He was heading westbound in the 3900 block of West Congress at 5:25 a.m. when a light-colored car pulled up and someone inside fired shots, police said. He was dropped off at Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to his right shoulder and left forearm, police said. He was listed in critical condition Sunday morning.

• A 16-year-old boy was shot at about 10:40 p.m. Saturday in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. The boy was walking in the 6200 block of South Hermitage when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been shot in the ankle, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

• A 19-year-old man was found lying on the ground at about 3:55 p.m. Saturday in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He had been shot in the head in the 2200 block of West 21st Street and was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital.

• A 13-year-old boy was critically injured Saturday afternoon in a Homan Square neighborhood shooting on the West Side. The boy was in the passenger seat of a van in the 3200 block of West Lexington when someone fired shots from a red SUV about 2:45 p.m., police said. The SUV sped away eastbound on Lexington. Family members drove the boy to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

• A 20-year-old man was shot multiple times at about 7:54 a.m. Saturday in the West Side neighborhood of Lawndale. The man was walking in the 3300 block of West Lexington at 7:54 a.m. when someone got out of a white Honda and fired at him multiple times, police said. He was shot in both legs and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition, police said.

• A 29-year-old man was wounded in a shooting at about 5:18 a.m. Saturday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was shot in the leg at Jackson and Sacramento, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, according to police.

• A 27-year-old man was taken to a South Side hospital by his friends after he was shot Saturday morning at about 5:10 a.m., police said. The man was dropped off at Holy Cross Hospital with several gunshot wounds and is listed in critical condition. It was not immediately known where the man was shot and his friends drove away after dropping him off, police said.

• About an hour earlier, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side. The teen was outside about 4 a.m. in the 1300 block of West 87th Street when a silver-colored vehicle pulled up and someone opened fire, police said. The boy suffered a graze wound to his abdomen. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lake in good condition, police said.

• A 23-year-old man was shot at about 3:40 a.m. Saturday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. The man was shot in the foot in the 3200 block of West Lake, police said. He also suffered a graze wound to his hip. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said. 

• A 35-year-old man was shot at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side. The man was shot in the upper right thigh in the 12100 block of South Front, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but his condition was not known, police said. 

• A 19-year-old man was shot and critically wounded in the South Shore neighborhood around 1:25 a.m. Saturday. He was shot in the head in the hallway of a building in the 6800 block of South Ridgeland, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition at the scene, according to police.

• About an hour earlier, two men and a woman were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Englewood neighborhood. At about 12:20 a.m. Saturday, a 31-year-old woman and 39-year-old man were in a vehicle talking to another man, 43, who was standing outside in the 6900 block of South Eggleston when a red sedan approached someone inside opened fire, police said. The 43-year-old was shot in the abdomen and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital in serious condition, police said. The woman was shot and also taken to Saint Bernard, but she was expected to be transferred to Stroger Hospital. Her condition had stabilized. The other man suffered a graze wound to his buttocks and was taken to Saint Bernard in good condition, police said.

• About 11:55 p.m. Friday, three people were inside a car in the 6900 block of South Cornell when a gunman walked up to the vehicle and opened fire, police said. A woman shot in the leg and a man shot in the arms and leg–both of them 25 years old–were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions stabilized, police said. The other man, 22, was shot in the leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His condition also stabilized.

• A 28-year-old man was shot about 11:05 p.m. Friday in the South Chicago neighborhood. The man was shot in the leg in the 8900 block of South Brandon and was taken to a hospital, police said.

• At about 10:30 p.m. Friday, a 20-year-old man walked into Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park with a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. His condition was stabilized. The man told investigators he was shot in the 9200 block of South Bishop.

• A 24-year-old man was shot at about 8:40 p.m. Friday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. He was on the sidewalk in the 4900 block of South Winchester when he heard shots and realized he had been struck, police said. The documented gang member was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, police said.

• An 18-year-old man was shot Friday afternoon in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood. He showed up at Saint Anthony Hospital at 4 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, police said. He told investigators the attack happened in the 3100 block of West Douglas, but the documented gang member wasn’t being cooperative with other details, police said. He is listed in good condition.
