Chicago Suburb Named Among Richest in Nation: Report

A Chicago suburb has been named one of the richest cities in the country, according to a new report.

North suburban Winnetka was named the second-richest city in the nation in a report by financial news company 24/7 Wall St.

The report ranked cities based on their median household incomes, poverty rates, median home values, educational attainment rates, shares of households making less than $10,000 and more than $200,000 and the percent of households that have married couples and children.

Winnetka’s population was cited as being “highly-paid and highly-educated,” with all but 0.8 percent of the city’s adults having at least a high school diploma and 88 percent having a bachelor’s degree.

The median household income in Winnetka is $211,250 and the median home value is $936,200, according to the report. That’s nearly five times the median home value for much of the metropolitan Chicago area, which currently sits at $206,300.

The richest city in the nation was Scarsdale, New York, which had a median household income of $233,311.

The report notes that the richest communities in the country are most often located within commuting distance of a major city. Four of the 10 wealthiest towns are within commuting distance of New York City, two are close to Dallas, and two are outside of San Francisco.

In eight of the 10 wealthiest towns and cities, at least 70 percent of households consisted of a married couple, and 30 percent of those couples had children.
