Chicago State University Protesters Block Traffic on Dan Ryan Expressway

The group of about 50 people is fighting the potential closure of the school due to a state budget impasse

Protesters at Chicago State University briefly shut down lanes on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 95th Street Thursday morning.

The group of about 50 people were seen blocking traffic on the expressway just after 10 a.m., but by 10:30 a.m., they had exited at 87th Street, according to police.

The protesters are fighting the potential closure of the school due to a state budget impasse, which could force the university to shut down before the end of the school year.

The state’s budget impasse has lasted roughly seven months so far and there is concern that with the March primary the stalemate could continue through the November election.

School officials predict the university will run out of money in March.
