Chicago Police Officer Accidentally Shoots Himself After Chase

The suspects' car lurched backwards forcing the officer to get out of the way, says FOP spokesperson

A six-mile chase ended with a Chicago police officer accidentally shooting himself, and three men arrested near Rainbow Beach.

The officer was performing a routine traffic stop near 67th and Racine Avenue around 1:45 a.m. Monday. Three people inside a car sped away taking the officer on a chase across the South Side, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The suspects’ car slammed into a chain-link fence near 79th and South Shore Drive sometime later, said Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

The car lurched backwards in the direction of the police officer. The officer tried to get out of the way but his gun went off. He accidentally shot himself in his right calf and broke a bone, said Camden.

The officer’s injuries were not serious, the paper reports.

Police arrested all three suspects and recovered three handguns, Camden said.
