Chicago Parents Charged With Murder In Baby's Death

Charges upgraded after baby on life support dies

The Rogers Park parents of a baby girl who died after her father allegedly covered her mouth have been charged with murder.

Prosecutors say Rigoberto Rodriguez, 29, of the 2500 block of West Fitch Avenue confessed to repeatedly covering his daughter's mouth last Thursday. The girl's mother, 21-year-old Angela Petrov also of the 2500 block of West Fitch Avenue, allegedly watched her boyfriend cover the baby's mouth until her body went limp.

The 5-month-old child was placed on life support and died this week in the hospital. Her death was ruled a homicide, and her parents were charged Friday.

Prosecutors said the Chicago couple had been drinking in the room where the girl was sleeping when the baby started crying.

Rodriguez and Petrov originally were charged with aggravated battery to a child. A judge on Sunday held them each on $5 million bail.
