Chicago Officials to Plant More Than 11,000 Trees

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the initiative last week with an extra $400,000 in the forestry budget

Residents of Chicago will see more than 11,000 new trees planted citywide this year.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the initiative last week with an extra $400,000 in the forestry budget for the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation.

Three agencies will plant the trees.

Roughly 4,200 will be planted by the Sanitation Department. The Chicago Department of Transportation will take care of more than 3,600 and the Chicago Park District plans to plant 4,000 trees.

City officials say they will be planted strategically in neighborhoods that have seen a large number of trees removed.
