Chicago Named Among Top Metro Areas for Millennials

Chicago received its highest marks in average commute time and access to bars

Twenty-somethings looking for an ideal place to settle next should keep an eye on Chicago.

A new report by Niche.com ranks the best metro areas for millennials, and Chicago earned a top spot, coming in at No. 13.

The report was compiled as part of the "2015 Niche Rankings," and it sized up cities based on the number of millennial residents, job opportunities and access to bars, restaurants and affordable housing.

Chicago made its highest grades in average commute time and access to bars, while it received slightly lower grades for crime and safety, access to restaurants and access to coffee shops. Other factors that were measured but did not receive letter grades included median rent ($964), higher education rate (33.8 percent), resident diversity (55 percent) and residents between the ages of 25 and 34 (14.4 percent).

The No. 1 spot in the ranking went to Austin, Texas, which has a higher percentage of millennial residents, a lower unemployment rate and a bigger percentage of residents with higher education compared to Chicago. Austin did receive lower grades in commute time and access to bars and had a slightly higher median rent price ($988) than Chicago, however.

Rounding out the top 10 spots are, in order, New York City, San Francisco; Denver; Boston; Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Portland, Ore.; Fargo, N.D.; and Des Moines, Iowa.

While no other Illinois cities made the list, a few other Midwestern neighbors earned spots, including Milwaukee (No. 31) and Indianapolis (No. 38)
