Suburban Honeymooners Stranded by Hurricane Patricia

The couple joked on social media that if they can get through this, they'll have a long-lasting marriage

Dusty Smith and Amanda Sanchez were on honeymoon before they found themselves being frantically evacuated from their hotel and weathering the strongest hurricane ever recorded.

Unfortunately Hoffman Estates couple, who tied the knot last week, wasn't able to enjoy paradise in Puerto Vallarta. The couple joked on social media that if they can get through this, they'll have a long-lasting marriage.

Smith’s mom, who has heard from her son since the hurricane hit, said the couple seems to be safe.

“It sounds like the hotel did a wonderful job,” Donna Smith, of Hanover Park, said. “I felt more secure after he told me what they were doing.”

As seen in the video above, a photo of them with other newlyweds from Friday morning shows the pair as they were shuttled to an elementary school more inland with a caption: "evacuation time, happy honeymoon."

The couple was supposed to fly back to Chicago on Sunday, but that may not happen. In the meantime, the newlyweds' family in Chicago is following the news closely.

“I think it'll be hard if the power goes out, or if they can't communicate anymore,” Donna Smith said.
