Chicago High School Football Player Dies After Being Injured in Game

A popular football player at a Chicago high school has died after being injured during a game.

Chicago Public Schools said Friday that a senior at Bogan High School passed away following an injury during a game Thursday night.

"For all of us at Chicago Public Schools, our hearts are heavy and saddened this morning to learn that one of our student athletes at Bogan High School has passed away,” CPS CEO Forrest Claypool said in a statement. “CPS grief counselors are on-site at Bogan to provide counseling for our students. We ask that you respect the privacy of the student's family and keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the teen as Andre Smith.

The Chicago Fire Department said a 17-year-old student athlete was transported Thursday from Stagg Stadium to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. The department said the student was unconscious but breathing at the time.

Smith was injured during the final play of Bogan's last game against Chicago Vocational High School. Witnesses said they saw him take a hit, but that he walked off the field and later collapsed.

Smith was pronounced dead Friday morning at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

A flag at Stagg Stadium was seen flying at half-staff Friday and students at Bogan High School said there was a definite sadness following Smith's death.

"He just walked around smiling," said close friend Dasia Smith. "He was nice to talk to and he loved football. That was one of his favorite sports."

Family members said a vigil is planned for Saturday in Smith's honor. An autopsy is also expected to be conducted Saturday, according to the medical examiner's office.
