Chicago Heights Boy Drowns at Northwest Indiana Beach

A 5-year-old Chicago Heights boy drowned in Lake Michigan Friday afternoon while swimming with family members near the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in northwest Indiana.

Nacere Bradley was with relatives at West Beach outside of Portage, Ind., about 4 p.m. when someone lost sight of him for a moment, officials said.

Bradley, of the 100 block of West 21st St. in Chicago Heights, was later found floating face down in the water, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

He was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital where he died at 9:54 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. The drowning appeared to be accidental, a spokesperson said.

A dispatcher for the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore declined to comment on the incident Saturday morning.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Saturday.
