Chicago Cop Injured in Southwest Side Crash

The impact of the crash sent the squad car into a light pole

A Chicago Police sergeant is recovering in the hospital Wednesday after he was involved in a bad crash on the city's Southwest Side.

Around 2:20 a.m. the sergeant's squad car and a green SUV collided at 59th Street and California Avenue. The impact of the crash sent the squad into a light pole, and the SUV hit the side of a Mexican restaurant.

The sergeant was treated at Christ Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The SUV driver was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with minor injuries.

It's unclear whether the squad car's lights and sirens were on at the time of the crash. Chicago Police say that's part of their ongoing investigation.
