Chicago Beachgoers Warned of Dangerous Swimming Conditions

Beachgoers in Chicago were warned Thursday to avoid going into Lake Michigan waters as strong rip currents and waves of up to five feet were possible.

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazard Statement for strong winds bringing high surf to the southwestern shores of Lake Michigan.

High waves between three and five feet were possible along with strong rip and structural currents.

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications urged visitors to stay out of the water as a precaution.

“Swimmers and boaters should be aware of the life-threatening waves and currents possible at the beaches,” OEMC said in a release. “Exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most significant wave and current impacts.”
