Chicago Alderman Plots Change After Shootings, Crime

With high end hotels and attractions, Streeterville is one of many tourist destination neighborhoods in Chicago.

But with the recent shootings along the lakefront and near Millennium Park, 42nd Ward Ald. Brendan Reilly is making a critical request.

First he wants to make sure gates are closed a the Ohio Street underpass between midnight and six am in the warm weather months,

"The idea is to close those off so police can monitor fewer locations late at night," he says.

Resident Erin Hill thinks that's a good idea.

"When I was walking through here, I was thinking I wouldn't want to be here at night, especially by myself," Hill said.

But not all residents agree it's enough.

"I don't see how that's going to prevent crime," Christina Marx said.

Reilly also wants more lights, cameras, and police visibility in the area and long the river walk and lakefront trail--especially on the weekends.

He says he's willing to help pay for some of it with more than one million aldermanic dollars.

His efforts and plans come on the heels of a deadly father's day shooting here on Ohio at lake Shore Drive, where a 25-year-old woman was killed.

The Chicago Department of Transportation said Tuesday its surveying the lighting and working on the gate issue with other agencies.
