Chi-Town Rising Forecast: What to Expect for New Year's Eve

Temperature highs are expected to dip to 28 degrees for New Year's Eve

Celebrators ringing in the New Year at Chicago’s major New Year’s Eve event Chi-Town Rising Thursday will want to bundle up.

After a winter storm brought freezing rain, sleet and snow to much of the area Monday and snowshowers lightly blanketed the area Wednesday, forecast predictions for the holiday indicate temperature highs will drop significantly.

For revelers planning to gather outside for the first-of-its-kind New Year’s Eve celebration downtown Thursday, temperature highs will dip into the 20s, but will likely be even colder by midnight. Wind chills will dip down to 15 degrees and lower for most areas.

The high Friday will likely stay in the 20s, but things will stay dry for the start of 2016.

Chi-Town Rising is slated to begin at 7 p.m., with four hours of music leading up to NBC 5’s TV broadcast, which begins just after 11 p.m. Headlining musical acts will also begin at 11 p.m., just one hour before a giant Chicago star will rise skyward up the Hyatt Regency Chicago’s West Tower culminating with a massive fireworks display.

While much of the celebration, including the Countdown Stage and Broadcast Boulevard, will be outside, there is also a ticketed party at the Corona Beach House that will offer indoor festivities for those looking to avoid the seasonably chilly weather.
