Shelter to Offer Catering Service for Household Pets

Many clients who are homebound and have difficulty providing for their pets were found giving up their own meals for their furry friends

A local Chicago animal shelter has paired with Meals on Wheels to provide four-legged family members their own meals in addition to the regular deliveries for their owners.

TAILS Humane Society has created a program called HomeBuddies which caters, literally, to household pets who live with Meals on Wheels recipients. The clients are often homebound and may have difficulty providing for themselves, much less their pets.

Many clients who are homebound and have difficulty providing for their pets were found giving up their own meals for their furry friends.HomeBuddies made sure to put a stop to that by providing free pet food and veterinary care so that they can care for their pets appropriately.

In addition, each HomeBuddies client is matched with a dedicated HomeBuddies volunteer who maintains regular contact with their client and ensures that pets are in good health.

The volunteers transport clients and pets (or pets alone if the client is unable to leave the house) to and from their veterinary visits at the TAILS Veterinary Clinic as well as to and from grooming appointments if necessary.

TAILS Humane Society is located in Dekalb, IL and works closely with animal control organizations and other animal welfare organizations, accepting pets from overcrowded shelters when their assistance is needed.
