Car Split In Two After Smashing Into Pole on Far South Side

One person was critically injured Monday after a single-car crash split a vehicle in two and left a scene emergency responders said they had never seen before.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near 87th and Avalon on the Far South Side, officials said.

Chicago police said the driver swerved to avoid people in the street near the intersection and slammed into a pole.

The driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old man, was pinned inside, according to fire officials. He was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious to critical condition, but police said his injuries were believed to be non-life threatening.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle, according to authorities.

The crash remained under investigation Monday morning.
