Car Hit by Train in Hegewisch

One person was reportedly injured early Sunday when a car was hit by a freight train in the Far South Hegewisch neighborhood.

The crash happened around 2 a.m. near East 130th Street and South Torrence Avenue when a car drove around the lowered gates of the train crossing and was hit by the oncoming freight train going westbound on a Norfolk Southern track, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

One person was critically injured and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and no one on the train was hurt, the Sun-Times reported.

Two other trains were reportedly delayed through the area for over an hour.
