Burst Pipes, Heating Troubles Reported Amid Dangerous Cold

Severe cold can mean trouble inside and out.

From burst pipes to broken furnaces inside, the bone-chilling temps Wednesday brought trouble to many homes in the Chicago area.

For Nancy James, the cold-weather fears became all too real as water flooded her kitchen in her Bronzeville apartment building. The burst pipe led to big problems for several tenants in the building.

“The water pipes just burst all over the place. I got water all over the floor,” James said.

A burst pipe caused trouble for residents in a Bronzeville apartment building. Dick Johnson reports.

Local heating and air companies say the cold months bring lots of calls of emergencies.

“We watch weather, we plan for this,” said Paul Hill with Jett’s Heating and Air.

Hill said the number one reason for failed furnaces is dirty filters and suggests changing filters every few weeks.

Lawrence Booth, a branch manager with with ServiceMaster DSI, said calls flooded in Wednesday for reports of burst pipes and broken hot water heaters.

Booth recommends letting faucets drip and raising thermostats a couple of degrees during the brutally cold days.
