Bullet Found in Classroom Puts School on Lockdown

Police did not find any other bullets following the initial discovery

A high school in Northwest Indiana was placed on lockdown Tuesday after a student found a bullet on the floor in a classroom.

The student who found the bullet at New Prairie High School in New Carlisle reported the finding to the school's principal at about 9 a.m., and school officials decided to put the school on immediate lockdown and conduct a search of all lockers in the building and the book bags of all students who had been in the classroom where the bullet was found.

Police did not find any other bullets or threats associated with the finding, La Porte County Sheriff John Boyd said. The lockdown was lifted at 11:15 a.m.

The origin of the bullet, which was identified as a .357 magnum round, is unknown, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
