5 Cubs Set to Start in MLB All-Star Game

The Chicago Cubs will be well-represented at the MLB All-Star Game next week in San Diego, as some of the city’s biggest stars will take the field at PetCo Park.

For the Cubs, they had five players elected into starting roles by fans, with outfielder Dexter Fowler joining an all-Cubs infield of Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Ben Zobrist, and Anthony Rizzo on the field for the Midsummer Classic.

Rizzo and Bryant will both participate in the game for the second consecutive year, as Rizzo was the starting designated hitter for the National League in 2015. Russell will make his first appearance in the game, as will Fowler, who will have to come off the disabled list to participate in the contest.

Zobrist will appear in his third All-Star Game, having participated in the 2009 and 2013 events while he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. The second baseman narrowly beat out Washington Nationals infielder Daniel Murphy in fan voting, winning by just 88 votes out of over six million ballots cast for the two players.

The Cubs' domination of the starting infield is an historic occasion, as it marks the first time since 1963 that a team will have all four starting infielders come from the same club. The Cubs having five starters is also historic, as no team has had that many starters from the same club since the 1985 Padres.

The Cubs will also have two pitchers on the All-Star Game roster, as Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester were both selected for the game. Arrieta will make his first ever All-Star Game appearance for the National League, while Lester will be on the team for the fourth time in his big league career.
