Bryant, Rizzo, Sale Selected as Reserves for MLB All-Star Game

The Chicago Cubs will have two representatives at the MLB All-Star Game in Cincinnati next week, as third baseman Kris Bryant and first baseman Anthony Rizzo were both named as reserve players for the contest.

White Sox's Chris Sale will represent the South Side, as the team's pitcher was added to the All-Star roster late Monday.

Sale, who has been an All-Star in each of the last four seasons, has tied the Major League record for consecutive games with at least 10 strikeouts, reaching that number in eight straight starts. He currently has a 2.09 ERA, and he has racked up 141 strikeouts and just 22 walks so far this season.

Bryant, who was called up by the Cubs early on in the season, has 12 home runs and 49 RBI in 71 games for the north siders. He currently sports a slash line of .279/.383/.485, and he was named as an injury replacement for Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who is recovering from an arm injury sustained after he was hit by a pitch.

As for whether or not Bryant will participate in the Home Run Derby on the Monday before the All-Star Game itself, the rookie third baseman said that he would be willing to do so if MLB offers him a spot.

As for Rizzo, the game will be his second consecutive All-Star appearance for the Cubs, and it comes as he is having a career year at the plate. He has slugged 15 home runs and driven in 45 RBI for the Cubs so far this season, and he’s also got a sparkling on-base percentage of .405 as he ranks among the league leaders in several offensive categories.

A couple of other Cubs players were worthy of consideration for All-Star spots, with Jake Arrieta and Jason Hammel chief among them, but neither were included on the list of reserves (although they could always be named as injury replacements if the need arises).
