Thousands of Chicagoans are hitting the road to witness Obama's inauguration in D.C. next week.

The old axiom states that the journey is more important that the destination. However, for thousands of Chicagoans heading to Washington, D.C., to witness the inauguration of President-elect Obama next week, both are equally significant.

"I won't be watching DVDs," Jon Langford, band member of both The Mekons and the Waco Brothers, told the Sun-Times. He'll be boarding one of two buses leaving Hideout on Sunday morning. "I thought about bringing an mp3 player, but that's not in the spirit of the event."

A Marquette Park woman has been putting her own brood together for the journey for months.

"I've begged and borrowed to get enough money to take everyone," Frazier family matriarch Pamela Frazier, told the Sun-Times. "We don't have tickets to anything, but that's OK. We're going to be there, soaking in the energy. We're going to be there at the swearing-in of our first African-American president."

Frazier is spending about $5,000 to take eight other members of her family on "A Road Trip to the White House," a three-day event by a South Side tour operator that involves spending Jan. 19 on a bus to D.C., Jan. 20 on the National Mall and Jan. 21 on the bus home.

Also eastward-bound is Lafayette Gatling's 2007 Prevost, better known as "the Rooster." Part of Gatling's Bus Charter (10133 S Halsted St), "the Rooster" is a 45-foot bus with bunk beds, two showers, a stove, and eight flat-screen TVs.

If all those bells and whistles aren't enough of a selling point, one of its past riders was pop star Britney Spears.

"It is the ‘star coach,'" said Gatling. "The star coach takes the star, and the bunk house bus takes the band. Britney Spears saw it on another tour in California. She had to have [it]."

"The Rooster" is just one of eight Gatling buses leaving Friday with excited church groups and school organizations. With such luxurious accommodations, they'll all feel like they're getting the star treatment as they make their way to one of the nation's historic moments.

  • chgowhtlady Monday, Jan 12 at 1:26 PM FLAG COMMENT I agree. Most TV stations are going to carry it live anyway. You will see better if you stay at home but I understand the need to 'be there'. I need my mortgage, electric and food bills to be paid. And since I will not be getting a cash stimulus package, I can watch it on TV. More than our presence there, Mr. Obama needs our prayers that all will go well during his term.
  • my opinion Monday, Jan 12 at 1:01 PM FLAG COMMENT "I've begged and borrowed to get enough money to take everyone," Please, if you've had to beg and borrow the money for the trip, do you have the money to pay your own bills??? Electric, gas, mortgage, food, etc????? I think all these people who just 'have' to be at the inauguration should stay home and use that money to take care of their issues on the home front!
