An 8-year-old boy with down syndrome was injured Tuesday after he fell more than 20 feet at Chicago's Midway Airport.

The boy was in the ticketing area when he fell to the baggage claim area below around 1:00 p.m., police said.

He was transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in "serious" condition with "non-life threatening injuries," Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford said.

Remarkably, the boy only suffered a cut lip, a law enforcement source said.

The boy's family had been waiting to fly home to Guadalajara Airport when he fell. A law enforcement source told NBC Chicago the boy had been playing with a plant near the glass railing.
