Boy Killed in Crash, Twin Fights for Life

A pickup truck ran a red light hitting the boy's father's car, says police

A deadly car crash in Lake County killed a 10-year-old Island Lake boy Monday and left his twin brother critically hurt.

Griffin Shirey, of the 3000 block of Max Court, was riding in the backseat of his father’s car with his brother north of Lake Zurich around 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey.

A pickup truck blew the red light at the intersection of Rand Road and Old McHenry Road, slamming into Shirey’s father’s 2000 Lincoln Continental, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The crash killed Griffin. His twin brother was taken to the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in critical condition. The children’s father, who was taken to Good Shephard, is expected to be released Tuesday morning.

Authorities believed drugs likely played a role in the crash. The pickup truck driver was arrested and underwent toxicology tests. Charges are pending the results, said Lake County Sheriff’s Sgt. Timothy Jonites.
