Boy Discovers Block of Wood Inside PlayStation 4 Box on Christmas

A 9-year-old boy in Massachusetts who was excited about his new PlayStation 4 Christmas present was pretty disappointed to find something else when he opened the box.

Brian Lundy told NBC affiliate WHDH that his son Scott was very happy when he unwrapped what he thought at the time was a new console that the family purchased at Target.

"He yelled, this is the best Christmas ever, this is the best Christmas ever, thank you Santa!" Lundy told the station.

But when he opened the box, there was no PlayStation. Instead, there was a block of wood that contained a crude drawing and the message "with love," according to WHDH.

Lundy told the station that a friend of Scott's cousin opened a PlayStation console box to find the same block.

"No child should be left upset and sad, especially on Christmas morning," Kristin Lundy, Scott's stepmother, told the station.

A Target spokesperson told NBC Chicago that their Saugus store replaced the box with a real console, gave the family a $100 gift card and apologized for the inconvenience.

When asked if the Target store was responsible for packaging the product, a spokesperson for the Minneapolis-based company said the following:

"While I can't speak to this specific indent as it’s under active investigation, we do track fraudulent returns and work with law enforcement across the country to identify and prosecute those responsible. Our store team takes care when restocking returned items to ensure they are in new condition."

PlayStation has yet to respond to NBC Chicago’s requests for comment.
