Boy, 14, Shot in Suburban Shopping Mall Parking Lot: Police

A 14-year-old boy was shot Thursday in a suburban shopping mall parking lot after a gunman followed the vehicle he was riding in and fired numerous shots, police said.

According to the Matteson Police Department, the 14-year-old was traveling west on Lincoln Highway in a vehicle with four other people when someone in another vehicle began following them. The group pulled into Rose Plaza around 1:30 p.m. and the driver then pulled up and opened fire, striking the teen in the lower back.

An officer patrolling near the Carson’s store at the shopping mall, heard about five gunshots in the area and saw two people running north from the plaza.

The officer stopped one of the people running, but said the person was actually a witness running from the shooting.

Officers from several police departments set up a perimeter and contained the crime scene but no suspects were taken into custody Thursday.

The teen was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and is expected to survive.

An investigation remained ongoing Thursday.
