A suburban Chicago man has died after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a gun he thought wasn't loaded.

Chadd Harrison, 25, of Bolingbrook was driving with two passengers early Saturday in Aurora when passengers say he began playing with .45-caliber handgun, before telling them that the gun wasn't loaded.

Harrison then held the gun to his head, pulled the trigger and the gun fired, shooting him in the head, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli says one of the passengers managed to put the vehicle in park and call police.

Harrison died at an Aurora hospital.
