Body of Missing Swimmer Recovered Near Dunes

Corey McFry was last seen about 200 yards from shore swimming with friends

The body of a missing 15-year-old swimmer in Northwest Indiana has been recovered, conservation officers confirmed.

Corey McFry was last seen about 200 yards from shore Sunday with friends near the Ogden Dunes when a big wave and strong undertow pulled him under, police said.

Corey's body was found at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday along the shore of Lake Michigan, about a quarter-mile from where he disappeared.

A member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary was walking the beach when he made the discovery, according to Gene Davis, an Indiana conservation officer.

The body was taken to the coroner’s office, and no autopsy is expected.

Waves were five to seven feet tall at the time Corey went missing, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, and rip current warnings made it difficult for rescue teams to search the water.

"Corey was standing out on a sandbar with three other friends and either stepped or was knocked off by a wave," Davis said. "He went under and never resurfaced."
