‘Blood or Oil Coming Out of Garage': Caller Describes Scene at Oak Forest Double Murder-Suicide

The caller said two people had gone to the home to see if their coworker was OK, but quickly discovered something wasn’t right

A chilling 911 phone call made just before police made a gruesome discovery inside a suburban Oak Forest home earlier this week has been released.

Margaret O’Leary, her 18-year-old son, Daniel Joost, and her husband, David Joost, were all found dead inside their home in what police believe was a double murder-suicide.

One of O’Leary’s coworkers made a call Monday asking for a well-being check on the 55-year-old crisis worker from Advocate Christ Hospital after she didn’t show up to work that day.

The coworker, identified only as Kelly, said two other coworkers had gone to O’Leary’s home to see if she was OK, but quickly discovered something wasn’t right.

“Two of my coworkers are at her house and they’re looking at the garage and they think that, they’re not sure, there’s some stuff it seems to be blood or oil coming out of the garage,” the caller told a dispatcher.

The woman told the dispatcher that her coworker was ringing the home’s doorbell but no one was answering.

“I have one coworker who’s standing outside of her door ringing the doorbell and nobody’s answering, the dog’s barking and she just sent me a picture of what looks to be oil or blood,” she said. “It kind of looks reddish so we were like, ‘Oh God we better call.’”

Authorities responded to the home around 8 p.m., forced their way inside and discovered O’Leary and her son dead in their bedrooms. Police believe they were killed by father and husband David Joost, who was found hanging in the home’s garage with slit wrists. A car in the garage had also been left running, according to police.

Neighbors said they hadn’t seen any activity at the home since Saturday. Preliminary investigation found the double homicide and suicide was likely carried out late Friday or early Saturday, according to police. There was not a suicide note left at the scene or any calls to the home in the past, police said.

The family is survived by a 20-year-old daughter, who was away at Millikin University in Decatur at the time of the deaths.
