Bike the Drive to Take Over Lake Shore Drive Sunday

The nearly 15-mile biking marathon will take over the major roadway from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Heads up Memorial Day weekend travelers-- bikers will be taking over Lake Shore Drive Sunday.

Lake Shore Drive will be closed to cars Sunday morning from Hollywood Avenue to 57th Street for the city’s annual Bike the Drive.

The nearly 15-mile biking event will take over the major roadway from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., according to the City of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management.

Bike the Drive, organized by the Active Transportation Alliance, boasts “five hours of car-free riding” for novice and veteran bikers alike.

Last year, nearly 20,000 professional and leisurely riders pedaled along the scenic roadway in a 30-mile round-trip course.

Funds raised by the event, sponsored by MB Financial Bank, support the Active Transportation Alliance to help fund projects dedicated to making biking and transportation safer in the Chicago area.
