Beloved Barber Found Beaten Above Shop

Police are investigating the murder of an Englewood barber, who was found beaten to death Sunday in his apartment above his business.

It happened in the 5600 block of South Racine Avenue.

Alameen Muhammad, 75, has been cutting hair for 55 years in the neighborhood, but also worked as a construction worker and a truck driver.

Friends and family find it hard to believe anyone would have a problem with a man who did everything he could to help others.

"He would give the kids haircuts when they couldn't afford for haircuts, when guys had to go to interviews for jobs, he would give them haircuts," the victim's son, Al Nathan, said.

Muhammad was also a volunteer with the Midwest Worker's Association.

"He was always willing to help out whenever he could, however he could," said Virginia Miller, who worked with him at the facility.

The victim's family believes his killer must have known him, but police would only say the case is an ongoing investigation.

"I want him to be remembered as Al the barber, the good man that helps a lot of people help," Nathan said.
