The Chicago Bears are reportedly shopping tight end Martellus Bennett, and they gave fans more evidence of that pursuit on Monday as they re-signed Zach Miller to a two-year contract.
Miller, who visited with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, will earn $6 million on the deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, and could earn $2 million more in incentives on the contract.
Miller appeared in 15 games for the Bears during the 2015 season, hauling in 34 receptions for 439 yards and five touchdowns. His success came on the heels of a series of serious injuries, and after looking elsewhere for free agent landing spots this offseason, he will return to the team that he broke out with.
In addition to Miller, the Bears also made another move at tight end over the weekend, inking Rob Housler to a one-year deal. The team also expressed interest in Jermaine Gresham over the weekend before he signed with the Arizona Cardinals for a one-year contract.
With those moves, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the Bears are at least exploring other options if they end up trading Bennett. The tight end, who is entering the final year of his contract, has been agitating for an extension, but that desire, as well as questions about his effect on the chemistry of the locker room, could signal an end to his time in Chicago.
