Barrington High School Student Charged for Bringing Handgun, Bullets to School: Police

The entire school was put on lockdown for 45 minutes confining all students and staff to their rooms while Barrington police searched the building after reports of "suspicious activity"

A Barrington High School student was arrested and charged Monday after allegedly bringing a handgun and bullets to school.

The 16-year-old boy, who has not been identified because of his age, was arrested after a staff member reported seeing him with a weapon in a campus bathroom, according to a joint statement from District 220 and the Barrington Police Department.

The entire school was immediately put on lockdown for 45 minutes confining all students and staff to their rooms while Barrington police searched the building.

School officials said the student was found with an unloaded gun and ammunition in a backpack.

The teen was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon on public schools grounds, felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of an unloaded firearm without a FOID, felony unlawful possession of a handgun and felony possession of a controlled substance.

School officials said the teen was carrying 38 strattera pills, three Xanax bars and less than 10 grams of psylocybin mushrooms. 

He was also charged with misdemeanors including having a firearm without a valid FOID card, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis. 

“All students are safe, everyone is accounted for, and police remain on site to assist with school personnel,” school officials said in a statement. “We want to commend all members of the high school community for immediately responding to the lockdown and following all security protocols. As a result, the student was identified and apprehended and the safety of everyone was verified.”
