Police Find Stolen Car Kankakee Inmate Used to Escape

Officers blocked off part of the street in the 1100 block of South Lincoln around 9:15 a.m.

Police gathered on a residential street in Kankakee Wednesday morning in a possible barricade situation after they found the car a jail inmate used to escape earlier that day.

Officers blocked off part of the street in the 1100 block of South Lincoln around 8 a.m. They subsequently entered several homes on the block armed and then left empty-handed.

Gretchen Jackson,  who lives on the block, said she spotted a car blocking her driveway around 7:45 a.m. and called police to have it removed. Police ran the license plates and determined it was the same car that the escaped inmate had stolen earlier in the morning, according to Jackson.

"It's April Fools' Day. I thought someone was playing a really ugly, horrible joke, but apparently it's no joke," Jackson said.

Between 30 and 40 police cars and the K9 unit surrounded several houses on the block when officers determined the car was stolen by the inmate, Jackson said.

An inmate escaped from Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankekee early Wednesday after attacking a guard, officials said.
