Bacon Lovers Makes 2,500-Pound Donation at Baconfest

It’s all about the poundage.

As Baconfest hit Chicago Saturday, Eckrich, who made their debut at the greasy fest with their Bacon Lovers Deli Meats, donated 2,500 pounds of meat to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

The donation, which matched non-perishable donations by visitors at the event known as “Bacon Nation,” was enough to help feed a family of four for nearly one year.

"This donation arrives as the Food Depository has been responding daily to record levels of need in our community," Kate Maehr, Executive Director and CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, said in a statement. "The generosity of Eckrich strengthens our response to hunger and helps feed men, women and children throughout Cook County."

The fifth annual event began Saturday at the UIC Forum, and features dozens of restaurants, liquor companies and breweries presenting their unique takes on the "other white meat."

The festival has supported the food bank over the last four years, donating portions of ticket proceeds and hosting food drives.

With the combined donations from Eckrich and visitors, more Chicagoans will be bringing home the bacon.
