Former Obama chief strategist David Axelrod has accepted the position of Senior Adviser in the White House, ABCNews.com reported Thursday evening.

Robert Gibbs is also likely to join Obama's White House as Press Secretary, and Obama would like his confidante Valerie Jarrett to play a key role. The exact parameters have not been set.

Axelrod, who owns AKP&D consulting firm, was formerly a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, according to the firm's Web site. In addition to serving as media advisor to Obama's campaign, he oversaw the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's independent expenditure program in 2006. That year, Democrats took control of both the House of Representatives and Senate. Axelrod also served as media advisor to Deval Patrick, who became the first African-American governor of Massachussetts.

One of the partners listed on the firm's Web site is David Plouffe, who was Obama's campaign manager.

Axelrod graduated from the University of Chicago, according to the firm's Web site.
