Authorities Discover Slain Teen's Car 15 Miles From Suburban Apartment

Authorities have uncovered the car of a teen girl found dead in her south suburban apartment Sunday.

Summer Mitchell’s vehicle was tracked down Monday night near the intersection of 94th and Everhart on Chicago’s South Side before it was taken to the Lansing Police Department to be analyzed for evidence Tuesday morning.

Mitchell’s car was 15 miles from her Lansing apartment in the 177th block of Commercial Avenue.

Lansing police have not released much information surrounding the case of the high school senior’s mysterious death, but said she was found in her apartment with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A semi-automatic pistol and "single spent shell casing" were found next to her body, authorities said.

"It was shocking," said neighbor Sherry Thomas. "I never knew something like this would happen over here because it's such a quiet neighborhood."

Mitchell's family says it was her boyfriend's mother who found the body, but they have yet to hear from her, or her son. Police say they met with Mitchell's live-in boyfriend and no charges were filed at that time. They added he is not considered a person of interest.

"They did indeed talk to the boyfriend and in his statement he said he was out of town," community activist Andrew Holmes, who is also Mitchell's uncle, said.

The 18-year-old's death has not been classified as a homicide. Autopsy results are pending the completion of forensic analysis on evidence recovered from the scene, police said.
